The Dangers of Sugar

Sugar tastes sweet but that doesn’t mean that sugar is sweet for your body. In moderation anything can be good for you. Most people do not enjoy sugar in moderation however. Today sugar is placed in everything from spaghetti sauce to soda. Processed food has become the norm for most people living a fast-paced lifestyle.

Most processed food has an overwhelming amount of sugar. High fructose corn syrup is a primary ingredient in many processed foods. This gives food its sweet flavor, and often leaves people feeling hungrier rather than full longer. This trend can often produce over-eating.

Sugar has terrible effects on the body. It can lead to obesity, chronic overweight, and type 2 diabetes. The body metabolizes high fructose corn syrup differently than glucose. Excess fructose consumed in the diet is often converted into fat, which is why so many people gain weight so quickly by eating processed foods containing high fructose corn syrup.

Too much sugar can also contribute to elevated blood pressure, increased kidney stress, low levels of inflammation (which lead to chronic pain) and other chronic diseases. Eating too much sugar can even increase the pain of arthritis and related conditions. Many consumers of sugar do not realize the large contribution eating too much sugar has on their health and wellness.

Fructose and sugar also contributes to a condition known as fatty-liver which can lead to chronic fatigue and low-level functioning. Over time the metabolism can slow down, contributing to even more problems with overweight and high cholesterol.

The only way to combat the effects of a high sugar diet is to reduce the amount of sugar in the diet. Eating sugar-free foods is often not helpful because the body still craves super sweet foods. Eating a balanced diet with vegetables and fruit will however, teach the body to enjoy healthy foods in moderation.
