The Food Guide Pyramid

Keeping our bodies healthy is not an easy task. Thousands of chemical reactions have to occur in each of our cells every single second. In order to fuel such processes, our bodies need to obtain the necessary nutrients from the foods that we eat. This includes essential vitamins, minerals, and proteins.  In order to help us know what our bodies need in terms of nutrients, the US Department of Agriculture developed the Food Guide Pyramid, which serves as an education tool that helps visualize the foods that you need to consume in order to get all the essential nutrients your body needs. The pyramid breaks the foods that you can consume into six main categories. Here is a simple brake-up of the Food Guide Pyramid:

1) Grains - The grains section of the pyramid includes whole grain breads. For instance, breakfast cereals, crackers, tortillas, pancakes, pasta, and rice would be some of the food items in this section.

2) Vegetables - This section of the pyramid consists of fresh or cooked vegetables, vegetable juices, and vegetable sauces.

3) Fruits - The fruit section of the pyramid consists of apples, bananas, berries, kiwi, grapes, mango, orange, pineapple among other fruits.

4) Milk Products - This section of the pyramid includes milk, yogurt, and cheese.

5) Meats/High Protein Foods - This section of the pyramid includes products high in protein, such as fish, poultry, peas, lentils, peanut butter, nuts, etc.

6) The final section of the pyramid consists of food items that need to be eaten sparingly, such as sweets, fats, and oils.

Thus, the main focus of the Food Guide Pyramid is to have a diet based on plant-base items. This in turns contributes to a diet low in fat, high in fiber, and rich in essential nutrients, like vitamins and minerals.
